Whether you’re a writer, graphic designer, or housekeeper, if you work for yourself you need to market your business.
The trouble with marketing is that it feels so…sales-y. And we all love to hate sales people, don’t we? Heaven knows we don’t want to actually be one! So how can you get out of your own way and learn to market yourself and your business?
Monday Marketing Meme
Kim Smith of Dramatic-Design.com has started a Monday Marketing Meme to encourage freelancers and other self-employed types to plan their marketing for the week and to share their plans via their blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I figure I need to get a handle on my marketing plan as much as everyone else, so I’ll be updating my weekly plans here on Mondays. I hope you’ll join us!
Marketing Plan Essentials: A Great Website
Lately I’ve been focusing on getting my website up and earning it’s keep–which means attracting clients.
Last week I sent out a bunch of emails looking for testimonials from past clients to fill out my Testimonials page. Testimonials are so important. They tell your potential client that someone else thought enough of your skills to pay you. They reinforce your trustworthiness. They lend credibility in an electronic world where you might never meet or even speak to your clients outside of email or instant messages.
I’m still working on the site. I’ve got a few more things I’d like to add, and I want to get this blog going strong, so that’s what I’ll be working on this week. What are your marketing plans? Leave me a comment, or blog about it, then check in over at Dramatic-Design and share the details!

Great Post, Cindy! You’re not the only one who needs to blog more! I’m totally guilty and need to join you on your journey! Thanks for playing along with the Monday Marketing Meme!

Thanks for dropping by, Kim. I think blogging fits nicely with “Consistent Client Communication” so it should be a great next step for you!
I have so many clients now that I can’t find any time for my own blog which makes me sad since I love to blog. I’m still going to take this idea and apply it to both marketing and blogging so I can at least find a healthy balance. Thanks for the reminder that I need to do that!

Hi Cassie! I think your problem is one that a lot of freelancers would wish for! You’re right though, blogging is the fun stuff we get to do after the work is done, and it gets pushed aside for later far too often.
Yeah, I’m definitely not complaining!
All of my clients are so sweet and amazing and keep sending me even more referrals. It’s great. I do feel bad for my poor blog that is getting neglected though. I just have to buckle down and git ‘er done.
