Are You Afraid of Commitment?

by cindy on November 18, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I made a huge commitment to myself to take my online business not only to the “next level” but into the stratosphere. At least that’s what it feels like when I look up at that mountain of a goal I’ve set for myself.

It didn’t take long to figure out I didn’t have all the necessary equipment to climb that mountain. You could say I was a few carabiners short of a safe climb.

The first thing I needed was a change in attitude. I don’t mean I needed to be more positive, hip-hip-hooray, cheering myself on. I do that already. I mean I had to start acting like a business person.

I started my first serious website almost a year ago, and I went about it all wrong. I searched for the cheapest registrar, the cheapest host, and all the free information about how to build an online business that I could find. Now, there’s nothing wrong with being frugal, and you really can get up and running with a website for well under $100.

The problem with my “do it the cheapest way possible” attitude is that it didn’t allow me to take myself – or my business – seriously. I treated my site like a hobby, not a business, and that’s exactly what it became.

Hobbyists scrape together funds to support their hobbies. Business people invest money to grow their business.

The other thing about declaring yourself as “being in business” is the fear. If your little hobby site sinks without so much as a ripple, who cares? You can move on to embroidery or something. But if your business fails, people will notice. They will talk. You will be branded a failure.

None of that is true of course. It just feels like it. That’s why it’s so much easier to just continue on with your hobby, as if you don’t care.

If you do care, and if you do want to succeed, you have to do something about it. That’s what NAMS is all about for me. Doing something. Making a commitment. Declaring that I am in business.

There are less than 30 seats left. Who’s committed enough to join me?

P.S. Hey, don’t forget, there’s a coupon code for $100 off. So go sign up for NAMS right now, and enter coupon code 100NAMS3. Go, before it’s sold out!
