Simple File Sharing With DropBox

I’ve been carrying around this USB drive in my purse for about six months now. It houses files I’m likely to need or want when I’m working on different computers. I’m sure a lot of you do the same thing.

It works great, but I am constantly afraid that I’m either going to lose it (if you could see my purse you would understand) or that it’s going to fail, and that is not an unwarranted concern. USB drives have a limited lifespan and they all eventually fail.

But this week a client introduced me to something better, and I’m just so thrilled with it I might never buy another USB drive again.

Meet My DropBox

DropBox is a nifty little program that allows you to sync your files online and across computers. The software installs a folder on your computer which works just like any other folder. Simply drag and drop files into your DropBox folder to sync them across computers. You can also make shared folders within your DropBox to share with other DropBox users. DropBox works whether you’re on Windows, a Mac, or even Linux, so there are no compatibility issues. There is also an iPhone ap, though I haven’t tried it out yet.

DropBox works on incremental backups, which means that when you change a file, it doesn’t upload the entire file again, it compares the two files and only makes the changes, so it’s not sucking up all your bandwidth all the time like some other online storage systems can.

DropBox has three plan levels: 2GB, 50GB, and 100GB. The 2GB plan is free, 50GB will run you about $10 per month, and 100GB is $20 per month. With that kind of file space, you could easily back up your entire hard drive and have room to spare.

Refer Your Friends for Added Storage

You can earn extra storage space by referring your friends–250MB for everyone who signs up through your link, up to 3GB added space. Of course, the links on this page are my referral links, so if you sign up from this page, you’ll get an extra 250MB of storage, and so will I.

If you work on multiple computers or have clients you need to share files with, DropBox really is the easiest way I’ve found to do that. Signing up is fast and painless, the software install takes less than three minutes, and using DropBox is simple and intuitive. Here’s that link again: http://www.getdropbox.com.

Cheers,

P.S. There is one other really helpful feature I hope to never need: undo and undelete. The free version comes with 30 days of file restore and recovery, and unlimited undo history is available with the paid versions.
